Description
Lecture, three hours. Introduction to the liturgical language of the Aksumite kingdom of Ethiopia. Geʽez is an ancient African language of world historical significance. With a rich history spanning centuries, its writings offer a unique vantage point on the interconnected development of African, Middle-Eastern, and Indian Ocean societies and intellectual traditions. It is written with an alphasyllabary (consonant and vowel in one symbol), derived from the Old South Arabian script, that was created for the Geʽez language and first attested in the 4th century CE. Geʽez came to be the church language of Ethiopia and is still used in Ethiopian Orthodox church services today. S/U or letter grading.
