The Great Powers: Mesopotamian History from Hammurabi to the Late Bronze Age Collapse
Lecture, three hours. In-depth study of the history of ancient Mesopotamia in 2nd millennium BCE. Focus on the reign of Hammurabi in the Old Babylonian period and the diplomatic exchange seen between the different polities of the Late Bronze Age. Overview of the political, social, and cultural history of Mesopotamia during period of tangled military and diplomatic interactions and intense exchanges that create unique cultural expressions. Examination of more personal perspectives of individuals throughout this period of history through engaging with primary source texts in translation. Concurrently scheduled with course C106B. S/U or letter grading.
