Lecture, three hours. Issues of ecology and political economy; continuing impacts of colonialism, nationalism, and current challenges for development; changes in social relations. Examination of Africa's significance to development of anthropology. Cultural background for understanding events in contemporary Africa provided. P/NP or letter grading.
