Lecture, four hours; outside study, eight hours. Properties and engineering behavior of multiphase soil systems; thermodynamics, interfacial physics, mechanics, and hydrology perspectives to understand unsaturated soil mechanics principles; geoengineering problems that involves unsaturated soils (e.g., precipitation-induced landslides, expansive soils, bearing capacity and settlement of shallow foundations, pavement and roadway drainage design, design and monitoring of waste containment facilities). May be repeated once for credit. Letter grading.
