Lecture, three hours. Examination of profound history of Asian and Asian American engagement with Greco-Roman classical antiquity. Deconstruction of myth of Western Civilization, and investigation of orientalism in ancient and modern contexts. Exploration of uses and missuses of Greco-Roman classical tradition by both Western and Eastern imperial powers in 19th and 20th centuries, as well as reappropriation of that tradition for different liberatory purposes. In 21st century, focus on Asian diaspora in the U.S., and consideration of how classical works have been reworked by Asian American artists to challenge dominant narratives and to uplift intersectional identities.
