Preservation of Cultural Heritage through Technology and Sustainability
Lecture, three hours. Introduction to principles, ethics, methods, and challenges of conserving cultural heritage, including mobile and immobile heritage. Study of history and significance of cultural heritage, factors that contribute to its deterioration, and various approaches used to conserve and protect it. Addresses impact of climate change, global issues, digital technology, and need for sustainability by presenting case studies from around the world. Case studies include Michelangelo's Sistine Chapel ceiling, Abu Simbel temples, Parthenon marbles, Gullah Geechee Cultural Heritage Corridor, and Mark Rothko's murals at Harvard University. Letter grading.
