(Same as Public Policy CM171.) Lecture, three hours. Requisite: course 102 or 111. Why are some countries rich, while other countries are poor? What can policymakers do to reduce poverty? Discussion of current research on these questions. Study of both methodologies used to answer questions in development economics, like natural experiments and randomized control trials, as well as relationship between development and institutions, education, growth, culture, and gender. Reading intensive, seminar-style course. Students are expected to read academic articles in economics and actively participate in discussions. Students also learn how to use data to evaluate policies. P/NP or letter grading.
