Lecture, four hours. Enforced requisite: course 3. Analysis of literary and other expressive genres within cultural context to examine issues of difference important to academic inquiry and responsible citizenship. Focus on close reading practices and genre conventions to deepen critical reading, thinking, and writing skills. Critical examination of attitudes, beliefs, and perspectives regarding different or underrepresented peoples and cultures, and responses of diverse authors to discourses promoting asymmetrical power relations. Minimum of 15 to 20 pages of revised text required in addition to regular informal writing exercises. Assignments could include written and multimodal composition. Satisfies Writing II requirement. Letter grading.
