Lecture, three hours. Requisite: course 100 or 120. Introduction to basic epidemiology of non-communicable diseases (NCDs) such as cardiovascular disease, cancer, diabetes, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), and unintentional injury. Major risk factors of NCDs including smoking, heavy alcohol consumption, reduced physical activities, diet, and air pollution. Examination of how non-communicable diseases are intertwined with (and often caused by) complex structural issues such as racism, sexism, and ageism by using the social determinants of health (SDOH) framework. P/NP or letter grading.
