Lecture, six hours. Requisites: courses 1, 103. Corequisite: course 113BD. History, politics, and philosophy of human rights; and how their globalization in modern history involves peaceful governance and international conflict. Study of different cultural histories and political experiences in which claims to racial or gender equality, equal economic opportunity, and religious freedom have emerged across the world. Students learn why imperialism, colonialism, and capitalism reinforce these man-made inequalities, and how interdisciplinary discourses account for human rights violations in conflict zones. Field trips included to gain first-hand experience of these processes. Offered in summer only. P/NP or letter grading.
