Exploration of development of colonial society in Brazil from discovery in 1500 to independence in 1822, placing it in context of Portugal's overseas expansion in Asia, Africa, and Americas. Emphasis on Portuguese, indigenous, and African roots of modern Brazil. P/NP or letter grading.
