Lecture, three to four hours; discussion, one hour (when scheduled). Preparation: one philosophy course. Students engage with philosophical views from the Western canon. Study is framed by a focus on the self and the psychological makeup of human agents. Students gain understanding of different conceptualizations of desire, rationality, and the emotions; and their relation to moral or ethical life. May be repeated for credit with consent of instructor. P/NP or letter grading.
