Lecture, three hours, discussion one hour. Requisites: Chemistry 153A, Life Sciences 7A, 7B, 7C, 7L. Discoveries of new science of aging biology, with examination of aging as plastic trait modulated by genes and physiological processes. Discussion of how these findings integrate with both nutritional modulation of lifespan and complex and profound relationship between underlying aging process and diseases of aging. Topics include dietary restriction, mitochondria, insulin/IGF signaling, and link between tumor suppression and organismal aging. Letter grading.
