Description

An introduction to the political economy of development with a focus on cities in the Global South. Course draws on topics such as infrastructure, labor, city markets, informality, climate change, and disaster management, emphasizing how politics shapes planning decisions. Exposes students to case studies of the political economy of planning from Africa, Asia, and Latin America. Interdisciplinary course that combines planning, political science, sociology, geography, and other fields, and centers the study of state-society relations for understanding development outcomes.
