Preparation for the Major
Complete nine required courses, 6 units from performance organizations, and one lower-division humanities elective. Enrollment in Musicology M6A, M6B, M6C and Music 20A, 20B, 20C requires taking the Music Theory Placement Examination. Students who do not pass the examination are required to take Music 3 prior to taking Music 20A.
The Major
Complete seven required courses, one upper-division elective, and a three-course capstone sequence. Each course applied toward the major must be taken for a letter grade (courses offered only on a P/NP grading basis are acceptable).
Required Courses
Complete the following courses. Note: In a given year, the department may designate individual Musicology seminars in the range 160-185, 188, or 191 as equivalent to 126 and 127.
Upper-Division Elective
Select one additional upper-division ethnomusicology, global jazz studies, music, or music industry seminar elective course (minimum of 4 units).
