Preparation for the Major
Complete two courses as follows. Each course must be taken for a letter grade and passed with a grade of C or better prior to beginning upper-division work in the major.
The Major
Complete 10 upper-division courses (45 units minimum) as follows. Each course must be taken for a letter grade and passed with a grade of C or better.
Electives
Complete seven elective courses selected from Portuguese 100A through 199. A minimum of five of the seven elective courses must be taken in Portuguese. A maximum of three courses from outside the department that focus on Brazil, Portugal, or Lusophone Africa may be applied toward the major with the approval of the undergraduate adviser. Up to three 4-unit Portuguese 197 or 199 courses may be applied toward the major.

Honors Program
The departmental honors program is open to majors who have completed a minimum of six upper-division major courses with a 3.7 grade-point average or better in those six courses. Eligibility is verified by the departmental counselor.
Honors Thesis Track (Optional)
On the basis of their coursework and special interests, students consult with a faculty member to formulate a research project that they pursue under the faculty member’s guidance. Approval of the honors thesis by the faculty mentor is the final requirement for departmental honors. Note: These courses may not be applied toward the majors.
