Portuguese and Brazilian Studies BA

Students are encouraged to spend up to one year in a Portuguese-speaking country to study in a university or conduct research. Appropriate credit may be granted in accordance with the individual program, arranged in consultation with the undergraduate faculty adviser in Portuguese. Proposals must be submitted in advance in writing and must be approved by the department.

Electives

Complete seven elective courses selected from Portuguese 100A through 199. A minimum of five of the seven elective courses must be taken in Portuguese. A maximum of three courses from outside the department that focus on Brazil, Portugal, or Lusophone Africa may be applied toward the major with the approval of the undergraduate adviser. Up to three 4-unit Portuguese 197 or 199 courses may be applied toward the major.

Honors Program

The departmental honors program is open to majors who have completed a minimum of six upper-division major courses with a 3.7 grade-point average or better in those six courses. Eligibility is verified by the departmental counselor.

Honors Thesis Track (Optional)

On the basis of their coursework and special interests, students consult with a faculty member to formulate a research project that they pursue under the faculty member’s guidance. Approval of the honors thesis by the faculty mentor is the final requirement for departmental honors. Note: These courses may not be applied toward the majors.
